Steel Boatbuilding Paperback – by Thomas Colvin (Author) out of 5 stars 7 ratings/5(6). I bought this book when trying to decide whether to undertake an aluminum boatbuilding project. There is a lot of good information here, but it is not really a "How-To".

It's much more general than that which actually made it a bit more useful than I expected it to be. This is a good start if you are considering building a metal boat/5(3).

This book was a great resource for research as well as frank and detailed advice on the constuction of a metal vessel. This book allowed me to transform my technical aeronautical knowledge and vocabulary into pratical understanding of the undertaking, its requirements, and set expectations for my own construction project.

Thoughts about Steel Boatbuilding. Steel is hard, cold, dirty, heavy, difficult, and noisy to work. It is also cheap, available everywhere in the world, incredibly strong so hard to damage (when you build to “stout,” not “theoretically strong enough” scantling sizes) but easy to repair if you do damage it, easy to find skilled labor to repair it anywhere in the world, easy and fast to.

If you are building a boat in either steel or fiberglass then you will find this book is invaluable. In summary this is the basic book for steel boatbuilding. If you read another book and it contradicts Colvin you want to be very careful and cross check with other sources.

Of course other authors may have something great to contribute, but you want to make darn sure that they know what they are talking about.
